Pope Francis was admitted to Rome’s Policlinico Agostino Gemelli hospital on Friday for treatment of bronchitis, according to a statement by the Vatican. The 88-year-old pontiff had been struggling to speak during a morning meeting, prompting concerns about his health. In a statement, the Vatican confirmed that Pope Francis would undergo diagnostic tests and continue his treatment for bronchitis in a hospital setting.

Pope Skips Key Public Events Amid Health Struggles

Pope Francis’s History of Respiratory and Health Challenges

Pope Francis, who has served as pontiff since 2013, has faced multiple health challenges in recent years, including influenza and other respiratory infections. In his youth, he suffered from pleurisy, which led to the removal of part of one lung. This history has made him more susceptible to lung infections, particularly in recent months.

Earlier this month, the pope revealed to pilgrims during a weekly audience that he was battling a “strong cold,” which the Vatican later clarified as bronchitis. His respiratory issues have persisted since mid-December, leading him to delegate the reading of statements at public events to aides in January and February.

Pope’s Busy Schedule Before Hospitalization

Despite his health struggles, Pope Francis maintained a busy schedule on Friday before being hospitalized. He held meetings with CNN CEO Mark Thompson, Slovakian Prime Minister Robert Fico, Cardinal Luis Tagle, and a Catholic philanthropy group based in Puerto Rico.

During his meeting with Fico, video footage showed the pope seated at his desk in the Vatican residence, smiling and speaking softly. However, CNN reported that while the pope was mentally alert, he struggled to speak for extended periods due to breathing difficulties.

Public Reactions and Prayers for the Pope’s Recovery

The news of Pope Francis’ hospitalization has sparked widespread concern among Catholics and global leaders. Many have expressed their prayers and well-wishes for his swift recovery. The pope’s resilience and dedication to his duties, despite his health challenges, continue to inspire millions worldwide.
